چکیده

Modern use of petroleum-derived oils as agricultural crop protectants dates back to the 1800s, but it was not until the latter half of the 20th century that advances in petroleum chemistry allowed substantial modification and diversification in their commercial applicability. In the 1880s, a kerosene–soap emulsion was used with some success against scales and aphids in citrus trees. The search for something more effective led to the use of emulsified crude petroleum sprays, but these were too phytotoxic. Eventually, researchers concentrated on distillates in the range between kerosene and lubricating oils. Three basic classes of carbon structures present in petroleum oils are paraffins, aromatics and naphthenes. In 1915, E. de Ong showed that tree injury was caused by substances (aromatics and other unsaturated components) in oils that were removable with sulfuric acid; the remainder is the unsulfonated residue, or UR. In 1929, this principle became the basis for W. Volck’s patents on low-unsaturate oils having a high level of nonreactivity to sulfuric acid. A few years later, R. Smith noted the relationship between pesticidal efficiency, phytotoxicity and oil heaviness; he recommended distillation as a preferred basis for grading spray oils for heaviness in terms of average molecular weight. Viscosity and boiling-range measurements ultimately became the most useful data for indicating performance rankings among oils of common origin and manufacture. The importance of the emulsifier used with the oil was determined to be in its influence on spray deposit, which affects its pest control efficacy. Modern refining improvements after distillation progressed from solvent extraction (1950s) to hydrogenation and dewaxing to increase the UR value (1960s), and hydrocracking, which Petroleum-derived spray oils: chemistry, history, refining and formulation

Comparative Study between Physical Properties of Virgin Oil and Re-Refining Oil

The lubricating oils are essential for operating engine with high efficiency. Therefore, the physical properties of oil such as flash point, pour point, kinematic viscosity, specific gravity and the American Petroleum Institute are necessary to be studied to indicate good quality of the lubricating oil. In this study, we compare the physical properties of two virgin oils with re-refining oil. T...

Distribution and Effect of Petroleum Oils and Kerosenes in Potato, Cucumber, Turnip, Barley,

Petroleum-oil sprays and fogs are used increasingly to control insect pests of economic plants. These oils are useful in controlling the aphid vectors of potato virus, but it is first necessary to learn which oils are tolerated by potato leaves. Hence, undiluted oils and cresoap emulsions of petroleum oils were tested on potato leaves to determine: (1) The rates of oil penetration into leaves; ...

Multi-Element Analysis of Petroleum Crude Oils using an Agilent 7900 ICP-MS Authors

In the petrochemical industry, certain elements are known to impact the performance and value of the final product, while others have detrimental effects on petroleum refining processes, as in the case of elements which can deactivate or poison catalysts. Consequently, there are several ASTM methods on the elemental analysis of oils, lubricants and fuels. Multi-Element Analysis of Petroleum Cru...

Mineral Oils, Untreated or Mildly Treated

Mineral oils (also known as base oils, mineral base oils or lubricant base oils) are chemical substances prepared from naturally occurring crude petroleum oil. Crude oil is distilled first at atmospheric pressure and then under high vacuum to yield vacuum distillates and residual fractions that can be further refined to mineral oils. Mineral oils refined from petroleum crude oils are complex an...

Canola-based Motor Oils

MOTOR OILS Motor oils have been utilized since the development of steam engines as a buffer between moving and static engine components. The basic jobs of the lubricant are to prevent metal-to-metal contact and to transfer heat from friction away from the contact point. During the time of steam power, one of the best lubricants available was derived from rapeseed oil. With the development of in...
